Fun fact: Puppeteers are bound by the Puppeteers of America constitution to share their secrets with everyone!
We love to share, we love to teach, and we love to learn! Currently, we offer a 3-hour workshop on sound, light, and movement in object performance. This class delves into the intersection and interdependence of these elements—essentials for creating a symbolic vocabulary that resonates with audiences on a visceral level.
The workshop begins with an overview of the creative process, followed by several short video clips and a live demonstration. In the second half, students break into small groups to engage in puppet show creation as they develop their own short pieces. The class culminates with a presentation of each piece.
We will offer this workshop in select cities during our upcoming Spring 2026 tour. Additionally, we are happy to discuss group rates if you'd like to bring us to your classroom or institution.
We also offer other workshops and will update this page when they become available!

Join PSU Professor of Puppetry Liz Howls for this intensive workshop focused on object performance, specifically tailored for adults. This course will delve into the fundamentals of puppet show creation, guiding participants in crafting a short-form puppet show (10 minutes or less) over eight 2-hour classes. Students have the option to work in collaborative groups or pursue a solo piece. The class will feature in-class screenings that demonstrate various approaches to puppetry, alongside intensive workshops on hand, tabletop, and shadow puppetry. Collaborative exercises will help participants—both groups and individuals—discover and create their own short-form pieces, with mentorship and support from the instructor as the shows are built and developed. The course will culminate in a public performance (puppet slam) of the final pieces on Friday, February 27th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Basic materials, tools, and workspace will be provided in class.
